TWENTY-SEVEN

He was.

McCann took a deep breath. “OK, picture the killer. He’s trailing some distance behind Annabel Hicks as she leaves the Blue Fox pub and starts walking home. The first part of her route is down Mountainview. There’s no way he took her there. So, we’re looking at darker, more secluded sections on three short blocks between Mountainview and her apartment building.”

“Good. Keep going.”

Carver jumped in. “He had to have a vehicle, and it had to be nearby. Talk about planning.”

Kulyk added, “That means he had to be super familiar with her routine. We should put out one of those advisories recommending that women walking alone after work vary their routes. Or better yet, walk with a friend.”

“Good idea. Who wants to continue?”

Poletti spoke up. “He hits her on the back of the head enough to knock her out, and maybe even kill her. Then, he has to get her in the car.”

McCann said, “Now, we reach the point I was thinking about. Look at the attention paid to the bodies of these women. The bathing, the hair, the wedding dress. Then, with her fully costumed, he has to place her back in the vehicle. There’s no way that was done at Mount Ida. Even if he’s using the underground parking, I can’t imagine him taking the chance of being seen, bringing her in and out of the building.”

“That means all our resort guests and condo residents are in the clear,” said Kulyk. “Unless they’re so devious, they have a second location.”

“You’re probably right. It’s possible,” admitted McCann.

“Displaying the bodies in public places is also a huge risk for him,” Carver pointed out. “Annabel Hicks on the Elk Ridge Trail, Cheyanne Cross out by the hot springs, and Shannon Docherty in the cemetery. I agree, Ezra. He has to have somewhere private to prepare.”

Mills spoke up. “I’m not saying the killer is Huey Finch. But his apartment is down a corridor on the main floor, and he has access from both the front and back of the building.”

“That’s a point in his favor. Let’s keep all this in mind as we interview the other suspects,” I replied.

We heard the station door open, and I was pretty sure that it was Dr. Lila Imrie who had come in and then stopped to chat with Wes Blackthorne.

I said, “OK, let's wind this up. Sergeant Rundle will go over the details of your assignments for the morning. Mills will be continuing with forensics, and the rest of us will do some interviews. If no one has any objection, I'll take Huey Finch.”

Dr. Imrie came in, once again looking like she had spent the day outside in the fresh air instead of in the morgue. Only her eyes betrayed her profession and the demands placed on her by these current cases.

“Hi, everyone,” she said with a tired smile, pulling out a chair at the head of the table and sitting down.

“How’s it going, doc?” asked Rundle.

“Busy, Goat, very busy.”

She opened a leather courier bag and drew out a file folder.
